This past weekend was a new 'first' for Brandon. A NOT FUN first for all of us.
March 7th my favorite grandfather passed away. He has been struggling with his health for many years and mostly Congested Heart Failure. He lived in Grand Rapids with Grandma. Grandpa Bob is Tim's (my step-dad) dad. Even though there are different marriages, generations, 'step' involvements to get to Brandon- he is still Brandon's Great-Grandfather and my Grandfather. I knew him since I was 7 years old and he was always filled with stories and konwledge. He was in the Marines, was highly involved in Northwest Airlines as a mechanic for many years, owned a greenhouse in Grand Rapids, was a State Trooper and highly involved in the community and politics.
Friday was his funeral in Grand Rapids. This was Brandon's first funeral. We managed to do the blessing at the beginning of the funeral and following of the casket. After we sat down he made a couple of peeps and I just didn't want myself and others to not enjoy the service. Brandon and I left and luckily sat behind glass and I was able to be apart of the service and Brandon was able to run and get out some energy after sitting in the car for 3 hours. He got lots of compliments in his little suit....my sweet, adorable boy!
Today (Monday) was the burial at Fort Snelling. Brandon went to daycare while the rest of the family headed to the cemetary. It was a brief ceremony with military honors, presentation of the flag and reading and prayer from Tim himself! It was the first time I have attended a funeral at Fort Snelling. Everything was very well organized and scheduled.
Brandon did get to meet his Great-Grandfather a few times. I have a few great photos that bring tears to my eyes when I see his Great-Grandfather telling him a very special story. That is what Grandpa Bob was about. That photo is now in a frame in Brandon's room. It isn't from an organized photo shoot or in a planned, adorable outfit but it is special and one to be displayed.
