Dear Brandon,

Dear Brandon,

It's official. You are in the midst of your first ear infection. I am sorry Brandon Bear that you are in pain, spiking a temp, and sneezing icky goobers. I am sorry it is hard to breathe but proud that you have learned that there are two ways to breathe (nose and mouth). I promise you will feel better soon.

Since you were born I have wished I could always protect you. I wanted them to prick my heel and draw blood for newborn testing. I wanted to get the shot of vitamin K in my thigh so you didn't have to. It wasn't possible little love. Those things are necessary to keep you healthy and well. Unfortunately even the world's best mom can't protect their child from everything. Not even Super-Mom! I wish I could brave the ear ache, stuffy nose, and temperature for you. However, I am so proud of you as I watch you brave it for yourself. In the future Brandon you will get more ear aches, more colds, more boo-boos. Since you are a boy, and your fathers son, you will probably end up with lots of cuts, scrapes, maybe even a broken bone and stitches. Not only will you endure physical pain in your life from falling off your bike and jumping on trampolines but you will endure heartache and emotional pain. Some other kid will call you a name (maybe even a younger sibling when we decide to give you one). Your daddy or I may loose our temper with you and hurt your feelings. I also promise you some girl is going to break your heart some day. I am sorry I can't bear it all for you. I am sorry I can't endure cuts, broken bones, and stitches for you. I am sorry I can't cry tears of sadness from a classmate calling you a name or some girl breaking your heart. However, I can be here for you. I will listen. I will share. I will care. I will support. I will love. There are lessons to learn from upcoming pain and hurt. I will help you learn those lessons. I will help teach them. I will learn and grow with you.

In the mean time I promise;

  • I will try and be gentle as I give you your bubble gum medicine.
  • I will stock up on D size batteries to keep the swing going so you can sleep.
  • I will pat your butt and rub your back to comfort you.
  • I will pay closer attention to if you are hot or cold and dress you appropriately.
  • I will always have a tissue in my hand to catch the sneezes.
  • I will keep my fingertips warm and soft to wipe away your tears.
  • I will pray for healing.
  • I will continue to get wet as I fill up your vaporizer.
  • I will be sad with you when you feel sad and happy when you feel happy.
  • I will sing 'You Are My Sunshine" as many times as you need me to so you can fall asleep.
  • I will celebrate with you when you are well again.
And of course, my sweet son, I ALWAYS love you. I'm proud of you my brave boy.

Get Well Soon.

Love,

Mommy
